Q: What are the top-rated charming areas in Motomachi when you arrived in this cultural-influenced district?
A: We enjoyed the Motomachi area that offers a beautiful exotic townscape infused with foreign and Japanese culture. With sloping streets offering views of the port and iconic western buildings to be seen, a leisurely stroll around the area is definitely in order. We particularly loved the stylish building such as the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward and Old British Consulate. The streetscape creates a picturesque movie-set appearance, offers the perfect backdrop for a memorable photo opportunity. You can get a sweeping view of the sea from Hachiman-zaka Slope and many films, dramas and TV commercials have been shot there. Besides, Motomachi is also home to the Russian Orthodox Church, Motomachi Roman Catholic Church and Hakodate Episcopal Church. The cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops based in buildings built between the late 19th century and the early 20th century also add flavor to the area.
