Kawada is a small town in Sabae City in the central Fukui Prefecture, located about 170 kilometers (105.6 miles) northeast of Kyoto. The scenery of traditional homes with beautiful black roof tiles gives off a nostalgic Japanese atmosphere.
It has also been known for ages as a production area for the traditional craft of Japanese lacquerware known in English as “Japanware”. There are production areas for lacquerware all over Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, but this “Echizen lacquerware” has a particularly long history. There is a workshop where you can experience the basic steps of making lacquerware (reservation required).
